Holly and Jessica to be remembered in song

Children in Soham will this week remember murdered schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman when they sing a song written in memory of the youngsters.

Music teacher Stephen Kenna, who works at Soham Village College, has written the song, Two Little Angels, which will be performed at the secondary school’s annual carol service in Ely Cathedral near Soham, on Thursday.

Holly and Jessica, both 10, vanished in early August after they were seen walking near their homes in Soham. Their bodies were found two weeks later in a ditch near Lakenheath, Suffolk.

The song recalls two earlier tributes to the youngsters the release of doves by children at the village college and a poem called Soham’s Rose which was written by Holly’s father, Kevin Wells.

Both the Wells and Chapman families have given their blessing to the song being performed.

Mr Kenna said he wrote the song following meetings between teachers and parents in Soham prior to the start of the autumn term.

“This came really from meetings we had before the schools came back in September,” said Mr Kenna.

“When I wrote the song I kept it to myself. The words were quite sentimental,” Mr Kenna said as well as recalling aspects of the town’s reaction to the tragedy the song also looked forward.

“I think it is important to move on,” he said. “The last third (of the song) is a celebration of Christmas.”

Jessica and Holly were both pupils at St Andrew’s Primary School, which is on the same site as the village college.

Holly’s brother Oliver and Jessica’s sister Alison are pupils at the village college.

Jessica’s mother Sharon is a learning support assistant at St Andrew’s.

Ian Huntley, 28, a former caretaker at Soham Village College, denies murdering the girls and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

His girlfriend, Maxine Carr, 25, a former teacher assistant in Holly and Jessica’s class, denies perverting the course of justice.

Both are awaiting trial at the Old Bailey.
