Israeli troops kill gunman in Gaza clash

Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian gunman during a fierce firefight in the Gaza Strip, the army said today.

A group of gunmen opened fire on the troops, who were posted near the Jewish settlement of Netzarim, the army said.

During the battle the soldiers shot dead one of the gunmen. One soldier was lightly wounded, Israeli military officials said.

Witnesses in the Gaza Strip said they heard a long exchange of fire overnight, but that Palestinian authorities had not yet received the body from the army.
