World Aids Day takes place today

Today is the 14th World Aids Day with latest statistics on the virus making for grim reading.

Throughout the world 42 million people are now living with HIV and AIDS.

The vast majority of sufferers are in sub-Saharan Africa but the disease is also on the increase in the western world.

South Africa remains the country with the highest number of HIV infections - one in nine people have contracted the disease.
