International arms monitors, “fully conscious of the responsibility,” headed out early today on their first Iraq inspections, the start of a new round whose outcome could determine the future of peace in the Middle East.

The UN teams drove off from their headquarters on Baghdad’s outskirts toward an undisclosed destination at 8.30am local time, (4.30am Irish time).
