22 dead, 58 injured in Brazil bus accident

A school bus and a tourist bus slammed into each other, killing 22 people - including a three-year-old and five members of one family – and injuring 58.

The accident occurred on Sunday night near Aracaju, the capital of Sergipe state, 1,135 miles north east of the capital Brasilia.

Police said the cause of the accident was unclear, but suspected the school bus driver, who was killed in the crash, had been speeding.

The bus had been taking high-school students and teachers to the nearby city of Maceio.

The other bus had been taking tourists from Recife, further to the north, for a three day trip to Aracaju on the Brazilian coast.

Fifteen people died at the crash site, and the others died in hospital.

Police spent much of the night prying victims from the wreckage.
