Bush fails to get Russian backing

President George Bush phoned his Russian Counterpart Vladimir Putin today but failed to get a commitment to back his UN resolution on Iraq.

Bush, who tonight was holding his first press conference since Republicans swept into control of Congress this week, had hoped Putin would signal Russian support for the resolution when it is put to the UN Security Council tomorrow.
