Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Likud Party took a lead in opinion polls today, a day after he called a January election, sending the nation into a turbulent campaign that threatens further instability in the Middle East.

Ahead of the general vote, the right-wing Likud and the moderate Labour Party will hold primaries to choose a leader and candidate for prime minister.
