Snap election looms in Israel

A snap election loomed in Israel tonight after the defence minister submitted his resignation, a major step toward taking his Labour Party out of the coalition government.

The trigger for the crumbling of Ariel Sharon’s broad-based “national unity” government was a dispute over funding for Jewish settlements. Labour had demanded a cut in allocations, but Sharon refused.
