A security guard in northwestern Italy has shot dead seven people and then killed himself.

Police say the victims were found in two adjacent apartments in Chieri, near Turin.

He is reported to have opened fire on family members and neighbours before turning the gun on himself.

Colonel Filippo Ricciarelli, of the carabinieri military-police in Turin said officers are still investigating but a murder-suicide was suspected.

The ANSA and AGI news agencies said the man was a security guard.
