Twelve die in bombings in Bali

Twelve people were killed and dozens injured in two explosions that rocked a popular resort on the tourist island of Bali, police and hospital workers said tonight.

One explosion happened in the capital Denpasar, said police spokesman Lt. Col. Yatim Suyatno.

The blast occurred at 11.05pm local time (4.05pm UK time) about 250 metres from the US Consulate in the city, he said.

The other explosion destroyed the Sari Club, a popular nightspot frequented by foreigners in the resort of Kuta Beach, according to national broadcaster Metro TV. Ten people were killed and dozens of others injured, it said.

But Putu Putra Wisata, a nurse at Sanglah hospital in Denpasar, said 12 people were killed.

“There are 12 people dead, some of them are foreigners. We are still too busy treating the injured. It’s bad,” he said.

The explosion was accompanied by a large fire that then engulfed another nightclub nearby, eyewitnesses said.

Suyatno said a police bomb squad was investigating the explosions.

The blasts in Bali came just hours after a small hand-made bomb went off near the Philippine Consulate in the port city of Manado on the central island of Sulawesi.
