A magazine which nine years ago lost a “devastating” libel action brought by John Major over claims that he had had an affair with a caterer said today that it was going to sue him to gets it costs back.

Spencer Neal, publisher of The New Statesman said that subject to locating papers from the time of Mr Major’s legal action, the political weekly planned to sue.
