Kashmir on red alert as voters go to polls

Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and policemen were on high alert across Kashmir today as voters went to the polls in critical elections, despite threats from Islamic militants.

Kashmir, the mountainous flashpoint between India and Pakistan, has seen increasingly bloody attacks in recent weeks, as separatist militants opposed to the election stepped up their campaign to scare politicians and voters away.
