A bus driver died today and 13 passengers were injured when a single-decker bus crashed into a tree today, police said.

West Midlands Police said the driver suffered fatal injuries when the Travel West Midlands service hit a sycamore in Laurel Road, Wren’s Nest, Dudley, shortly before 6.30am.

The driver, believed to be aged 50, was cut free from the wreckage but was later pronounced dead, said a force spokesman.

Six casualties were taken to Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, four to Walsall’s Manor Hospital, and three to New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.

Laurel Road and nearby Limes Road were closed for several hours, and diversions were set up.
