Iraq has invited the chief United Nations weapons inspector to Baghdad for technical talks that it said could lead to a return of inspectors after nearly four years.

Iraq's foreign minister Naji Sabri sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan saying the government would like chief inspector Hans Blix and UN weapons experts to come to Baghdad "at the earliest agreed upon time".
