Mother and son drown in mountain lake

A Briton and her four-year-old son drowned while swimming in a mountain lake in western Switzerland.

Divers found the bodies of the 40-year-old and the boy hours later in eight feet of water in the Schwarzsee late last night.

They had disappeared while swimming to shore, police in Fribourg said.

Officials said four members of the family had taken a boat out on the lake. As they returned to their hotel, the woman and her son jumped into the water about 70 yards from shore and planned to swim the rest of the way.

The woman’s husband continued to the hotel landing stage and then went to the shore. He alerted authorities after finding no one there.

The victims’ names and home town were not released.

It was the second double drowning of tourists in three days in Switzerland.

On Saturday, an American and his five-year-old daughter died in a pool at their holiday home in the central Swiss resort of Engelberg.
