Police are hunting a top Pakistani swimmer who has gone missing from his team's camp at the Commonwealth Games.

National backstroke champion Abid Hussain, 19, failed to return to the Athletes' Village in Fallowfield, Manchester, after visiting friends.

Pakistani team officials fear the swimmer may have gone in search of a job in the UK and have said action will be taken if he does not return.

Hussain arrived with the team at the beginning of the week and went missing on Tuesday.

General manager of the Pakistani team Syed Qaiser said it was mystery why the teenager had gone missing.

A Greater Manchester police spokesman said: "A Pakistani athlete has been reported missing from the team at the Athletes' Village and we are currently making inquiries into his whereabouts."
