Britain today rejected the applications of two young boys who sought asylum at the British Consulate in the southern Australian city of Melbourne, a lawyer said.

The boys, aged 12 and 13, were crying as they were taken from the consulate to a detention centre in the city just after 6pm (9am Irish time), ending an eight-hour standoff.
