The Green Party has renewed its call for the closure of the Sellafield nuclear plant after British Nuclear Fuels, the company which runs the factory, reported losses of £2.3bn (€3.5bn) today.

The Green Party has renewed its call for the closure of the Sellafield nuclear plant after British Nuclear Fuels, the company which runs the factory, reported losses of £2.3bn (€3.5bn) today.

British environmentalists said the losses enhance the argument that Sellafield is not economically viable and should be shut down.

Irish Green Party MEP Nuala Ahern said: "Reprocessing should stop because either BNFL is a profitable company or it’s losing vast amounts of money.

"Clearly, it’s the latter and it’s time we shut Sellafield and cleaned it up, both physically and morally."
