Pentagon says US will not strike at Iraq first

A US invasion of Iraq would only be given the go-ahead if Saddam Hussein made the first move, senior Pentagon officials said today.

The dictator would have to provoke the West by attacking a neighbour or testing a nuclear weapon before the Bush administration could justify sending in troops.
