Swiss air traffic control today said its automatic warning system alerting controllers that two planes are on a collision course was switched off at the time of the crash.

Swiss air traffic control today said its automatic warning system alerting controllers that two planes are on a collision course was switched off at the time of the crash.

A spokesman said it was switched off for maintenance, but that it was "a purely theoretical question" whether the system alone could have prevented the disaster.
