Sri Lankan authorities have imposed curfews and banned rallies in the east of the island in an effort to prevent further clashes between Tamils and Muslims, following the death of five people in overnight violence.

Sri Lankan authorities have imposed curfews and banned rallies in the east of the island in an effort to prevent further clashes between Tamils and Muslims, following the death of five people in overnight violence.

Police and troops are to strictly enforce a 24-hour curfew, according to a government statement.
