Pope John Paul II sent his prayers to the victims of the earthquake in northwestern Iran today and called for a ‘‘generous’’ international response in the relief effort.

The pontiff made the comments in his weekly appearance in St Peter’s Square, as well as in a message of condolence sent to Iranian authorities via the Vatican’s apostolic nunciature in Tehran.
