Drunken fans run amok after England victory

Exhilarated England fans ignored pleas to control themselves and found themselves under arrest for public order offences, police in England said.

Drunken yobs caused chaos on the streets of Hull and Grimsby after the match finished at around 3.30pm yesterday, Humberside Police said.

Bottles and coins were thrown at police during 90 minutes of chaos, a spokesman said.

Pubs had been packed with fans since 11am, most of whom were drinking throughout England’s epic 1-0 World Cup win over Argentina.

Between eight and 10 people were arrested for public order offences and Beverley Road in Hull had to be closed as a crowd of more than 500 spilled out of pubs in the area.

Officers were drafted in from surrounding areas to help contain the situation.

Insp Steve Page of Humberside Police said: ‘‘The public ignored police warnings to control themselves and drunken yobs caused difficulties in both Hull and Grimsby.’’

‘‘Warm weather’’ and ‘‘high spirits’’ were exacerbating factors, police said.

However, police said that the violence did not continue later into the evening.

There were a ‘‘small number of disturbances’’ in the area, police said, but they ‘‘were not attributable to football celebrations’’.
