Security guard kills Palestinian bomber

A security guard at an Israeli nightclub has shot and killed a suspected Palestinian militant who was allegedly attempting to drive a car bomb into the building in Tel Aviv.

Around 200 people were inside the Studio 49 nightclub when the guard saw the attacker turn his car sharply and drive towards the club.

He opened fire, hitting the driver, who detonated explosives as he was falling out of the vehicle.

"Then I fired the rest of the bullets into his head," the guard said.

One other person was wounded.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, a militant group linked to Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement, later claimed responsibility for the attack.

The militia identified the driver as Amer Shkokani, from the West Bank town of El Bireh. In a videotaped statement, Shkokani said he was carrying out the attack to avenge the killing of al-Aqsa members by Israel.

Earlier this week, the Israeli army assassinated the leader of the Al-Aqsa Brigade in Nablus, along with two of his lieutenants.
