Death toll from Indian heatwave reaches 1,030

The death toll from a heatwave which gripped south-eastern India last week has risen to at least 1,030 as reports of further deaths trickled in from remote villages in recent days.

Most of the dead were elderly people who could not bear the 50 degrees Celsius temperatures recorded in Andhra Pradesh state between May 9 and 15.
