East Timor celebrates

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs, David Andrews, will represent Ireland in Dili today when East Timor officially becomes the newest nation.

The Asian nation is celebrating its independence after 25 years of Indonesian occupation.

Former rebel leader Jose Gusmao has been elected as the country’s president.

Ireland gives over €3m in aid to East Timor every year and has established a permanent office in the capital Dili.
