Potters Bar train crash claims seventh victim

Seven people were killed and five more suffered critical injuries when another disaster struck the British railway network.

The carnage came when a passenger train derailed, smashing into a station platform in Potters Bar, north of London.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of terror as one of the carriages hurtled sideways along two platforms.

The accident, the fifth major rail disaster in five years, dealt another body blow to an industry already staggering from one crisis to another.

There were immediate demands for a public inquiry and recriminations over the return of death to the railways.

Police confirmed tonight that a seventh person had died in hospital of injuries sustained in the crash.
