UK airport fire halts flights

Passenger flights were delayed today from one of the UK’s largest international airports following a fire.

Both terminals at Birmingham International Airport were closed as a precaution when a fire broke out in a service area.

A spokeswoman for the airport was unable to confirm how many flights were disrupted but said services at Terminal 1 had now resumed and staff were looking to reopen Terminal 2 by lunchtime.

‘‘There was a small electrical fire at 8.26am which has caused some disruption and loss of power,’’ she said.

‘‘This has been dealt with by West Midlands Fire Service and we are currently looking to resume operations.’’

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said 15 firefighters put out the blaze and were continuing to monitor the area.
