Mortars fired at US soldiers in Afghanistan

Three mortar rounds were fired at US soldiers in eastern Afghanistan yesterday, a military spokesman revealed today.

No injuries were reported after the attack in Gardez, around 60 miles south of the capital, Kabul.

Major Bryan Hilferty, a spokesman for the US military, declined to say whether the US forces returned fire, but said they went to where the mortars were fired and “had an encounter with people there”.

He added: “We are continuing to investigate, but it’s hard to tell in this country if that means they are

attacking us. Three mortar rounds in this country is not a particularly big deal.”
