Powell fails to secure Israeli withdrawal

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has failed in his mission to convince hardline Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to pull his troops out of the Palestinian cities in the West Bank.

At a press conference after their meeting, Mr Sharon said the offensive in the West Bank will continue despite growing international condemnation of the Israeli action.
