Lebanese guerrillas fire rockets into northern Israel

Suspected Hezbollah guerrillas have fired around two dozen rockets from Lebanon into the Golan Heights and northern Israel in one of the biggest cross-border assaults since Israel withdrew from south Lebanon two years ago.

At least one person was injured in an Israeli army outpost which was struck by the Soviet-made Katyusha rockets.

Hezbollah’s TV station in Beirut said a tank was also hit and had been destroyed. Israel retaliated for the attack by bombing suspected Hezbollah positions in south Lebanon.

Lebanese guerrillas have stepped up attacks against Israel since the country’s army invaded major Palestinian towns and cities in the West Bank two weeks ago.

Israel has said it holds Syria, the main power in Lebanon, responsible for the attacks and has threatened to retaliate if the rocket attacks don’t cease.
