Afghan poppy farmers shot at government officials today and blocked one of the country’s major transport routes in protest at the programme to eradicate the opium bearing flowers.

The programme, announced last week by interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai’s government, is aimed at preventing Afghanistan from resuming its position as the world’s largest producer of opium, which is refined into heroin.
