The French gunman who calmly shot dead eight members of a city council in a suburb of Paris yesterday has committed suicide while in custody.

33-year old Richard Durn jumped from a window of a police building in the capital. He had told police during interrogation that he often "thought about killing someone and killing himself afterwards".
