Eight people were killed today when an Italian tractor-trailer collided with a bus carrying Dutch skiers home from the French Alps, police said.

The crash near the eastern French city of Metz also left three people seriously injured, and 24 others suffering from minor injuries.

The Italian vehicle allegedly crossed a divide on the A31 highway and hit the bus head-on, police said.

The driver of the bus and five passengers were killed, as were the two people riding in the tractor-trailer.

The bus was carrying 61 passengers from the French ski resort of Valmorel to the Netherlands, police said.
