Sharon denies meetings

Claims that meetings were to be held between Israeli and Palestinian officials today have been denied by Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon.

Reports during the night pointed towards talks between the two groups early today but Mr Sharon has denied that any such meetings had been arranged.

It was hoped that Palestinian representatives would meet Israeli officials in order to end the 18 month long tirade of violence.

The statement that there were to be no discussions was announced after a late-night meeting with US envoy, Anthony Zinni.

Palestinian leaders argue that there will be no negotiations until Israeli troops withdraw from key West Bank and Gaza strip towns.
