Don't worry, bomber tells mother

The Lockerbie bomber told his mother not to worry about him during his last phone call home before beginning his life sentence, it was reported today.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi also expressed his faith in Allah after losing his appeal at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands, his brother said.

Speaking from the family home in the south of Tripoli, Libya, Mohamed Ali said Al Megrahi’s final words to his 89-year-old mother Fatuma were: ‘‘Take care of yourself, don’t worry about me.’’

On his brother’s reaction to losing his appeal, Mohamed Ali told the paper: ‘‘He is very good.

‘‘He is believing in Allah, he is trusting in Allah. ‘‘He accepted the decision like a brave man even though he knows he is innocent.’’

Mohamed Ali also condemned the Lockerbie trial and subsequent appeal.

He said: ‘‘Nobody from our country and society believes in Western justice. They showed they are below the Third World because they bow to pressure from superior countries.’’

And he told The Herald newspaper his brother was not the terrorist behind the bombing on Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie on December 21 1988.

‘‘Believe me he is a very sensitive man. He loves everybody,’’ he said.
