MEPs seek tougher sanctions against Zimbabwe

Members of the European Parliament have endorsed a motion calling on all 15 EU member states to refuse to recognise the result of the recent Zimbabwean presidential election.

President Robert Mugabe was returned to power after winning the election, but most observers have described the vote as fundamentally flawed.

The European Union introduced sanctions against Mr Mugabe and his senior officials last month after he refused to allow EU observers to monitor the election.

The resolution passed in the European Parliament today calls for an extension of the sanctions to include the entire Zimbabwean Government and President Mugabe’s family.
