The European Union is to discuss the possibility of further sanctions against Zimbabwe when the leaders of the 15 member states meet for a summit in Barcelona this weekend.

The European Union is to discuss the possibility of further sanctions against Zimbabwe when the leaders of the 15 member states meet for a summit in Barcelona this weekend.

An EU spokeswoman said the union has yet to make a final assessment of the results of Zimbabwe’s presidential election, but she said there is concern that the ballot, which returned President Robert Mugabe to power, was unfair.

She said the EU has been in contact with Norwegian election observers and the independent Zimbabwe Election Support Network, who both said the election was fundamentally flawed.

Last month, the EU imposed sanctions against Mr Mugabe and his senior officials after he refused to allow EU observers to freely monitor the voting.
