The US has observed a moment of silence to mark the six-month anniversary of the attacks on New York and Washington, which left almost 3,000 people dead.

Tonight, two beams of light will shine into the sky from the site of the World Trade Towers, which were demolished in the attacks. Later today, US President George W Bush will use the anniversary to rally further support for his "war on terrorism".
