Zimbabwe’s presidential elections slid into chaos today as the government appeared to defy an order extending voting, two senior opposition officials were arrested, and state-run media accused Britain and America of preparing ‘‘a major military offensive’’.

The High Court ordered voting to be extended for an extra day across the country after huge queues stopped thousands from casting their ballots over the weekend, but observers said few polling stations had reopened.
