Sanctions could be imposed on the US if it does not comply with World Trade Organisation rulings on the current row over steel tariffs, European Union trade commissioner Pascal Lamy warned today.

The EU is complaining to the WTO over President George W Bush’s decision to impose tariffs of up to 30% on imported steel to protect the American industry, in a move which it is feared will hit Europe’s steel mills hard.
