Cherie Blair 'targeted by toxic package'

British Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie was the target of a toxic package sent to 10 Downing Street by "tartan terrorists", according to reports.

Police are hunting the extremist Scottish nationalists who posted the aromatherapy oils containing caustic soda.

The package was addressed specifically to Tony Blair's wife, the BBC reports. It was sent from the Glasgow Mail Centre.

A Downing Street spokesman refused to comment on whom the package was addressed to and said: "We never comment on security issues."

However, a government source said nobody at No 10 had been in danger from the package.

Scotland Yard says it has received a call from a man claiming to be from the Scottish National Liberation Army saying 16 packages had been sent.

But so far only two have been received, by Downing Street and an unnamed Member of the Scottish Parliament. Any others are expected to arrive today.

The padded envelopes contained bottles purporting to hold eucalyptus oil but which really contained sodium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic soda, which can cause permanent scarring if it comes into contact with skin.

Scotland Yard has described the fake oil and instructions on how to use it as "cynically dangerous".

A spokesman said the location where the second package was posted was not being disclosed to protect the identity of the Scottish politician concerned.
