The Sudanese army said today it has captured a major airport in the south of the country used by rebels to attack oil fields.

The Sudanese army said today it has captured a major airport in the south of the country used by rebels to attack oil fields.

After fierce battles, the army took over the airport in the Nihal Dio area in the oil-rich Unity province, about 800kms (500 miles) south of the capital, Khartoum, army spokesman Gen Mohammed Bashir Suleiman said in a statement.
