Two men were lucky to escape with minor injuries after their car went over a cliff, police said today.

The driver of the BMW saloon was found 300 feet down the cliff face at Cayton Bay, near Scarborough, UK, after a three-hour search involving search and rescue teams and a police helicopter.

The driver was alive and conscious when members of Britain's North York Moors search and rescue team found him near the car, 300 feet down the cliff, shortly after 1am today, said a North Yorkshire Police spokesman.

The passenger from the car was found wandering nearby shortly after the accident, which happened on the A165 at around 10.15pm last night. He had suffered minor injuries.

He was airlifted to Scarborough District Hospital where he was being detained for observations but his injuries were not thought to be serious.

Police said the car was found halfway down the cliff face and it was not known at this stage what caused the accident.
