The leader of the Zimbabwe journalists union - the first prominent government critic arrested under new security laws - was freed today after the state withdrew charges against him, his lawyer said.

Basildon Peta, secretary-general of the country’s Union of Journalists and a correspondent for Britain’s Independent newspaper, had been charged with organising an illegal protest outside parliament while MPS were debating draconian media curbs.
