Officials in Turkey have called off the search for survivors of yesterday’s earthquake, which damaged hundreds of buildings and killed at least 45 people in a rural area in the centre of the county.

Yesterday’s tremor, which measured around 6.0 on the Richter Scale, injured at least 170 people and toppled 150 buildings.

Officials said today that there is no hope of finding anyone alive in the rubble.

Dozens of aftershocks are still jolting the region and officials have urged residents to stay away from damaged buildings.

The quake, felt up to 190 miles to the north and west of the epicentre, came just three years after two massive tremors killed 18,000 people in north-western Turkey.
