23 migrants killed after boat capsized

A speedboat carrying 23 Salvadoran migrants who were planning to cross illegally into the US capsized in a river in southern Mexico killing six people and leaving another 11 missing and feared dead, officials said.

A speedboat carrying 23 Salvadoran migrants who were planning to cross illegally into the US capsized in a river in southern Mexico killing six people and leaving another 11 missing and feared dead, officials said.

Also missing were two Mexican smugglers who were riding on the single-engine metal and fibreglass boat, which struck a rock and capsized in the frigid waters of the Rio Usumacinta.

Police and divers rescued six Salvadorans who were able to cling to boulders and swim to safety. Authorities also located the bodies of six passengers who drowned following the accident.
