Enraged Argentines have stormed banks and destroyed cash machines to protest against the penning up of their savings.

The rising anger came as President Eduardo Duhalde promised to end the six-week old bank freeze, which was first imposed by former President Fernando de la Rua last month.

People ransacked banks, ripping out computers and smashing windows, in three major cities in the country.
