NY Police close to final WTC death toll

Police in New York said today they are close to a final death toll after the collapse of the World Trade Centre.

The number of people listed as missing or dead in the terror strikes stands at 2,893 - almost half the initial estimate.

New York police said it was close to ending any confusion regarding names on the list, which detectives have worked on for months to remove duplications and misspellings.
