Kosovo has today failed to elect a president, forcing the crucial ballot to a third round.

Ibrahim Rugova failed to win the two-thirds majority needed to be elected the first leader of the southern Yugoslav province since the UN and NATO took control in June 1999.

In today’s voting, Rugova won only 50 votes, far short of the 80 he needed to win the top post.
